Meets Records Fall as Day one of the
New York Relays come to a close.
April, 18, 2008- The first signs of spring hit Icahn Stadium today with the temperature tipping the scale above 80 degrees, and not only was the sun hot but was so was the performances that took place today during the 2008 New York Relays.
Five Stadium Records were broken today which began with the distance runners on both the boys and girls sides on the 3000m and and the 3200m.  The 3000m record which was previously held by Katie Sullivan of Ursuline set at last years relays was broken by then current teammate Meghan Brown with a time of 10:42.03. For the fellows the 3200m records was taken down by Nate Hathaway of Scarborough with a time of 9:42.23, breaking the record by seven seconds.  Then the next group to step onto the was the Boy's 2000m Steeple Chase, the race went out fast with a trio from Warwick Valley taking the lead from the gun and dominating from start to finish.  Freshman, Ryan Florkiewicz lead the race crossing the line in first place to set a new meet record Tim Luthin, who finished runner up to Florkiewicz managed to break the all time freshman state record in the event.  In additional Matt Laroe finished in third to give Warwick Valley the the one, two, three punch.
Also on the track tonight, were the non-invitational sprint medley relays.  Again we saw both the boys and the girls records fall as Garden City for the girls ran 4:12.34 breaking the previous record held by Bronxville by four seconds.  On the boys side breaking the record again by four seconds was Valley Stream North taking down Midwood's time from 2007.
Not to be outdone by the runners the NYR saw some solid performances in the invitational field events.  The boy's discus throw was a crowd pleasing contest with the top 3 competitors battling it out from start to finish.  In the field that saw three throwers over the 150' mark, Vincenzo Chiariello of Monsignor Farrell was able to walk away with the historically famous New York Relays Plaque with a mark of 161'00"  The girls invitational discus was won by Sacred Heart Academy's Nina Rinker with a toss of 123'11"
Action resumes tomorrow starting at 8:45am as the heptathletes take the runway in the long jump and the decathletes in the 110m high hurdles.
Chiariello of Farrell wins the boys invitational discus with a new meet record.
Freshman Tim Luthin set new Freshman State record in the 2000m Steeple Chase.
