April, 18, 2008- The first signs of
spring hit Icahn Stadium today with the temperature tipping
the scale above 80 degrees, and not only was the sun hot but
was so was the performances that took place today during the
2008 New York Relays.
Five Stadium Records were broken today which began with the
distance runners on both the boys and girls sides on the
3000m and and the 3200m. The 3000m record which was
previously held by Katie Sullivan of Ursuline set at last
years relays was broken by then current teammate Meghan
Brown with a time of 10:42.03. For the fellows the 3200m
records was taken down by Nate Hathaway of Scarborough with
a time of 9:42.23, breaking the record by seven seconds.
Then the next group to step onto the was the Boy's 2000m
Steeple Chase, the race went out fast with a trio from
Warwick Valley taking the lead from the gun and dominating
from start to finish. Freshman, Ryan Florkiewicz lead
the race crossing the line in first place to set a
new meet record
Tim Luthin, who finished runner up to Florkiewicz managed to
break the all time freshman state record in the
event. In additional Matt Laroe finished in third to give
Warwick Valley the the one, two, three punch.
Also on the track tonight, were the non-invitational sprint
medley relays. Again we saw both the boys and the
girls records fall as Garden City for the girls ran 4:12.34
breaking the previous record held by Bronxville by four
seconds. On the boys side breaking the record again by
four seconds was Valley Stream North taking down Midwood's
time from 2007.
Not to be outdone by the runners the NYR saw some solid
performances in the invitational field events. The
boy's discus throw was a crowd pleasing contest with the top
3 competitors battling it out from start to finish. In
the field that saw three throwers over the 150' mark,
Vincenzo Chiariello of Monsignor Farrell was able to walk
away with the historically famous New York Relays Plaque
with a mark of 161'00" The girls invitational discus
was won by Sacred Heart Academy's Nina Rinker with a toss of
123'11"
Action resumes tomorrow starting at 8:45am as the
heptathletes take the runway in the long jump and the
decathletes in the 110m high hurdles.
